If you’re getting on in years and own your own home, play with the calculator at rmaarp.com to get a feel for the extra monthly income you could claim. The AARP web site appropriately notes a lot of caveats. This is not a step to be taken lightly, but it could be interesting to contemplate.

(But remember, any promise of a monthly payment for life that doesn’t rise with inflation is a risky best we won’t have much inflation.)
