Waterboarding, Bush, Cheney, Trump and others have assured us, is not torture. And what’s being investigated here is not a plot to kill Americans, but a plot to kill American democracy itself . . . long the world’s beacon of hope . . . a counterbalance to tyranny . . . to last-century autocrats like Stalin who branded the press “the enemy of the people” and Hitler who was adored by white supremacists . . . a counterbalance to contemporary autocrats like Putin and Duterte and Kim who have journalists and political rivals murdered.
