Things You Can’t Do January 4, 2022January 5, 2022 A friend lied to me and a whole lot of other investors — and begins serving his five-year federal prison sentence next week. Lying to investors is something you can’t do. You can go to jail for that. Here’s another thing you can’t do: Tell lenders your building is worth $527 million while telling tax authorities it’s worth $16 million. If it comes to the notice of prosecutors, you can go to jail for that. And here’s another: You can’t try to overturn an American election after all your recounts and lawsuits have failed. You can’t sit for 187 minutes watching Capitol police being attacked and do nothing. You can’t do that if the attackers are foreign — and surely Trump would not have. You can’t do that if they are black — and surely Trump would not have. You can’t even do that if they all voted for you — but Trump did. This is coming to the notice of prosecutors, and there is at least a chance it will not end well for him. That so many Republicans in the House and Senate and throughout the land think it’s okay for him to have done these things means we may have come to the end of the American experiment; what Ronald Reagan called that shining city on a hill, and that so much of the world looked up to. Or it may not. It’s up to us.
